I consider the proportion of pe de and te of a integrated product design procedure is like the famous painting of Mondrian composition with red yellow and blue.
These colors should be balanced coordinate and harmonized with each other in a painting. So I tend to think these three parts of design should come together at the same time. they are all essential but in my opinion and especially In my project People takes the biggest part of the research.
And this board shows what I have been doing for the last few weeks
I started doing brainstorming first. After gathering all my ideas, I classified them into 5 main parts: problems, reasons, enjoyable experience, learn quickly and PEDETE.
The Reason part includes social, personal, historical, economical reasons( infantilism, overbearing and over protected parents, one child policy and aging society, lose of responsibility of younger generation) all of which need my deeper study for the next few weeks. The happy experience is Sth I hope to achieve by my design.
Then I did the questionnaire, I got 103 responses from different parts of world and the bar and pie chart reports are here.
I started doing user behavior observing at the same time , I observed 17 cooking beginners in two weeks and recorded their behavior during their cooking. And I edited a short video and published on my blog.
I also keep on looking for the relevant product on the internet and in supermarket. Like the products shown in the design box. Those sketch are not original because I still haven't made up my mind . I hope I can draw some for the real Guru's day .
The technology part of my project is about the ergonomic of tools. And I want to do some research about the origin of kitchen ware I hope the study can help me with the understanding of this project. I also find Sth from the observing that cooking beginners love to share what they are cooking by social net work by sharing and talk to other people, maybe this is the chance for me to do Sth more social digital and have more to talk about technology.
So back to the people part, last week I have been doing an experiment of hand tools.I feel learn cooking is like learn how to walk. There are no rules for walking and there is no rules for cooking, we always do it in our own way . For us, walking is the simplest thing in ordinary life, but for baby they have to learn walking by assistant, taught by others and by their own understanding and practice. After the baby learning and living for a few years, they get their own walking posture just like some people gets toe in and some gets toe out and some has the habits walking elegantly and some are not. Not matter how long you took learn walking and whatever way you walk, u would always know how to walk as u grow up. In a similar way, some people can cook delicious meal, someone can't and someone learn quickly and some one still don't know how to cook. I think the problem is how we are taught and how we are assisted by the tools and how we think of cooking, which are very important to build a good cooking habit.
After the brainstorming and the observing, I found a interesting point that most cooking beginners learn cooking by trying. But As a cooking learner myself, I don't really understand how those kitchen ware work and how to chose when there are so many in the market. What are the different between kitchen ware and stationary and garden ware and DIY tools. What's the different between shaver and peeler, paper scissors and kitchen scissors, saws and carving knife. So I guess maybe it would be a good point for me to try it myself and do the experiment with others that I can understand why tools should be made like this.
I hope I can make tools that can teach cooking in a quick, enjoyable and right way for beginners.
