Before i start, i’d like to invite you to pair up and have some popcorn together. Put your left hand in the glove and hold the plate with your partner. standing face to face. And these are my 200 words.
My question is How Can you Escape Technology While You Eat?
You can always see lots of people use their phone while they eat instead of communicate with the real people sit in front of them. Just like this illustration. We change technology, and at the same time technology is changing our behavior as well.
I started from questionnaire survey, numbers of people eat with technology and prefer to eat with technology rather than with real people. Then i interviewed a designer in Taiwan who did a similar project with me. Based on his research, I studied about critical design which makes people to think beyond design itself. You can see those designs are humorous it’s crazy to eat with a bowl that you can put your phone in it, but they could make you feel that it is not right to be so addicted with technology. Then i designed this artifact, this plate is like a compulsory connection between people which makes you focus on the food and the one you eat with. You have to balance with your partner with one hand and eat with another hand, with no extra hand to use phone or even take notes on your notebook. This is the iterative testing, it’s a game that two people eat popcorn, the second you finish the all the popcorn on the plate, the first one who grab the chocolate egg wins. It like playing chess when there are only 10 popcorns left, you have to decide how many should i eat this time, who is gonna be the one eat the last popcorn.
