I have spent a long time thinking about my project yesterday. I know that i don't have much time left so i need to hurry. I summarized the feedback i got. Both of Chris and Graham thought the apron is the most interesting in my project (maybe because it is a new definition for apron, maybe it combined a new way of interaction and create a new experience for cooking). But other products seem not even worth doing for them. They think they are old-fashion not creative enough, and with wrong ergonomics design. However my primary idea was to design a set of tools that cooking beginners can buy without buying any other utensils in the supermarket. If i follow Graham's advice only to make 3 of them into professional-grade prototypes that wouldn't be enough. Basically, there are two ways for me to design kitchen wares: 1. manufacture design- solemn design, it's kind of hard and not ideal for me to do this kind of design in only 2 weeks. 2. experimental design- serious design, make some breakthrough challenge the traditional experience and create more possibilities. I admit that two-in-one products are very old-fashion, but maybe i can do it in an innovative way- assembling the parts yourself. I read two books about design for kids in the morning and i was wondering how can i make cooking a more playful and attractive experience for beginners. Somebody may say no at the beginning- why should i assemble everything before i start cooking? that's a question but may not be a problem anymore until you find your way of cooking. After discussing with 2 Guru today, I finally understand my problems. 1) I designed the appearance for innovation but i might overlooked ergonomics or experience. 2) the handle assembling method is old-fashion as well 3) I should view my design on a macro level and should not stuck by my mind. 3) try to find a new way to let the users to love cooking: PC game might be a jumping off point. Why people dedicated to online game? because challenging and provide you a sense of accomplishment (get rated, grated, awarded) Why people don't like cooking? Xi through a new light on this phenomenon today. The time the users spend on learning and cooking and the energy they consumed can not overtaken the result itself.
This gives me a new idea about this project, i may design a marking scheme but Chris said it is too much for a product designer to do. I need to balance it anyway. Hope my weekends can be productive. I always suffer from a phase when i am doing design that i would hate myself and hate how shallow and terrible the design i am doing. And today, i finally convinced that i stepped into that period after the talk with Graham and Chris.I don't feel ambitious anymore, the holy crap i would question everything around me. Graham said the two-in-one style is not redesign but an old-fashion way of making(i agree). And i should consider more for the beginners, e.p. the peeler- squeezer which might get people hurt by the blade. I should be aware of why i should do that. Chris said i should get feedback from users and i asked 3 people today but i found it really hard to satisfy everyone's need. The mark 2 prototype should be something perfect, i should feel proud to show others, and of manufacture level. Finally, Graham suggested me to pick 3 in my series to dedicate in and make a little app that have strong visual identity.
I think what i need to do on the next few days is that decide what i eventually gonna do even if i need do start all over again, ask more people for suggestions, figure out what is important in European design what they value most. However i talked to my friend today she said that i should think about my self in case to be conceited. Maybe there is really some feeling inside me that made me blinded and arrogant that pushes every good things away. I do need to start all over again and think. Honestly, I am confused again. I will need to discuss with tutors the day after tomorrow and I don't know what to do now. There is definetly something wrong with my design cus i don't feel i love it right now. I should love my design like i always do whereas this series are not amazing at all. i cannot find the point that made me proud of myself and my design. i have been thinking about what's wrong with my design process but found nothing yet. Maybe because my progress was too quick and i was busy with other stuff before and didn't pay enough attention on it? I would be pleased if i can find a good jumping off point even if i need to start all over.
I talked with Xi today and he said i can combine it with TUI(tangible user interaction).Honestly, a lot of people recommend me to do that as well. but the problem is i can't find a perfect solution. I read some dissertations on this topic and it totally remind me of the project i did in Lenovo. A tangible user interface is one in which the user interacts with a digital system through the manipulation of physical objects linked to and directly representing a quality of said system. The idea with TUIs is to have a direct link between the system and the way you control it through physical manipulations by having an underlying meaning or direct relationship which connects the physical manipulations to the behaviours which they trigger on the system.
