The first time I ever really know him was when I was in Taiwan. I went to the movie festival and watched his documentary. I was amazed by the way he sees things. and now he is in UK. I am aware how hard is it for him to go abroad. And luckily he had it. The reason why I put him in the journal is because his work is similar to my topic - Surveillance. He was being surveillanced by Chinese government and he hate about it and expressed his anger in the art works. He would be my biggest stakeholder. I really liked the way he says about government surveillance that I heard in the audio guide (unfortunately I didn't write it down), but he generally meant that China is becoming a very powerful country because it surveillance people for no reason. He did made some points in this line. The governments in developed world are getting very strong and stable. Like UK, USA. they can instantly censored that what people are thinking and planning. It's beneficial to fight against terrorists, but what about freedom. Can I post anything I want online and not getting myself in trouble? No. And I don't even dare to do that. The police will knock on my door in few minutes. I bet the government is censoring what I am typing on weebly right now.
I am not sure if I like Ai Weiwei or not. I like him always being brave and daring to challenge authority but he is annoying when he use a fascist way to express the idea. But he is clever and knowing how to please the west. The first time I ever really know him was when I was in Taiwan. I went to the movie festival and watched his documentary. We live in ‘surveillance society’ in which vast quantities of data are captured about us at almost every moment of our lives. As London department stores and casinos have already introduced biometric recognition, it becomes necessary for us to arm our selves and fight back. It is easy to hack an Iris Scanner just using Google Images. 1) download a high-resolution picture of David Cameron 2) print it out 3) cut the eyes out 4) pin the iris pattern on the glasses. Now I suppose you can easily bypass 10 Downing Street’s biometric reconciling system. The phone blocking case gives you a choice whether to expose your location information to organizations who tracks your phone or to hide your self by putting your phone inside. ‘Invisible Faces’ is an anti surveillance makeup kit which allows you to be seen by real people but can not be recognized in automatic system, so that you can protect your online data. Facial-recognition algorithms(OpenCV) relies on the identification and spatial relationship of key facial features, like symmetry and tonal contours of dark and light areas. Accordingly, instead of concealing your face by masks, you can block detection by creating an “invisible-face” using hair, makeup, and unique accessories. ‘Invisible Faces’ was especially designed and tested for occasions like protest, parade, festival, party, and clubbing.
This collection is a series of jewelry around the face which tries to discuss in a playful way that what would be considered as beauty in the future surveillance city. Ancient tribes use piercing, neck rings, and ear stretching to scare people and to protect themselves. I transformed the form and silhouette of human body by clips so that face recognize system would not work on you. This was the last minute call. At 12o' clock I was preparing my intervention showcase tomorrow for the first presentation of the semester. I had to do it myself. Exhausted. 1 INVISIBLE FACES (Testy bag) ‘Invisible Faces’ is an an/ surveillance makeup kit which allows you to be seen by real people but can not be recognized in automa/c system, so that you can protect your online data. 2 REFLECTIVE FACE (Mirror mask) It is a double-side mirror mask which allows you to see threw but when other people watch you, all they can see is their faces’ reflec/on on your face. This installation questions why people want to watch each other and why you want to know others’ life. 3 DISTORTION (jewelry) This collec/on is a series of jewelry around the face which tries to discuss in a playful way that what would be considered as beauty in the future surveillance city. Ancient tribes use piercing, neck rings, and ear stretching to scare people and to protect themselves. I transformed the form and silhoueFe of human body by clips so that face recognize system would not work on you. 4 UNDERCOVER(Iris glasses and locational info blocking case) We live in ‘surveillance society’ in which vast quan//es of data are captured about us at almost every moment of our lives. How can we protect our digital information in this society of electronic surveillance?
We live in ‘surveillance society’ in which vast quantities of data are captured about us at almost every moment of our lives by every organization with which we deal and many which we do not know to be dealing with us, and are analyzed, matched, mined and inferences drawn from then on an industrial scale. (Lace, 2005) I am interested in the social, cultural and ethical consequences of emerging technologies, using critical and speculative design as the medium to explore those consequences. I would like to create a Privacy Wonderland to probe the effect of new digital technologies on privacy and discuss whether it is possible to achieve total privacy while still getting benefits from technologies. There are already five interventions ongoing which are INVISIBLE FACES, REFLECTIVE FACE, DISTORTION, UNDERCOVER, and CONFESSIONS OF THE DATA SET. I plan to refine, to broaden the possibilities, and to further analyze these interventions in the following weeks. And I will test the next intervention to better answer my question. The result would be series of solutions: raising people’s awareness of protecting their privacy and knowing what the risks are, ensuring that we are prepared and educated for the brave new future, and creating a future that honors and respects personal privacy. My latest version of question is How can we protect our digital information in this society of electronic surveillance?
During the summer, I had been working in AmbientTV studio with two artists who have been working around the topic of surveillance and big data for over 10 years. Now we are working on their new film Confessions of the data Set, which I also consider as my side intervention. We are now doing the fundraising and the script. It will be a film discussing how big data in smart cities would influence people’s life. The first thing I did in the summer was to reflect on my first intervention and developed it into a more commercialized testy bag. Then I started to do my second intervention which I wanted to take the first intervention to another level that makes people to question and think about the issue beyond the intervention itself. It is a double-side mirror mask which allows you to see threw but when other people watch you, all they can see is their own reflection. This installation questions why people want to watch each other and why you want to know others’ life. I wore the piece in some crowded places like train station, squares, carnival, arts events, on the tube and buses. It actually created conversations. There were people came to me and asked me what I was doing and why I was doing that. There were people took photo of me and stared at me on my face, but actually they were staring at themselves. Because the second intervention is more like a installation and nobody would really wear it in real life, then I decided to create something more wearable. My 3rd intervention is a series of jewelry which tries to discuss in a playful way that what would be considered as beauty in the future surveillance city. Ancient tribes use piercing, neck rings, tattoo and ear stretching to scare people and to protect themselves. Now lots of people are doing it and think it has aesthetic value. Then I transformed the form of human appearance by clips so that face recognize system would not recognize you as you. Now you might not feel comfortable with the way it looks but in the future when people realized how important it is to protect your information and when everybody does it, it might become the new beauty. The 4th interventions tends to be more practical and have more usability value but more critical. As London department stores and casinos are already using biometric recognition, it becomes necessary for us to protect ourselves. It is easy to hack an Iris Scanner just using Google Images. 1) download a high-resolution picture of the people you want to hack 2) print it out 3) cut the eyes out 4) pin the iris pattern on the glasses. Now the machine would recognize you as… The phone blocking case gives you a choice whether to expose your location information to organizations who tracks your phone or to give yourself a little privacy by putting your phone inside. We have a very bonded relationship after the service design course ended. I am still connection with the classmates. As I said, it is a very unusual experience for me. I met up with Yoong at V&A to join the digital design weekend together. I am very interested in this event as part of London Design Week activities. I have been work around digital design for few years and would love to know what's new in London. We came across some performers doing some future performance. Amazing outfits and equipments. It was very crowded and the feeling of London is the best city came up again. There were also some installations as well as a part of LDW exhibition. Then the most amazing part happened in the Learning Zone. I met Rike! the designer form RCA who I always want to make connection with. She was doing her project collecting people's Iris pattern. We had a very exciting conversation and I also asked her few questions about her project. She will be in London and I could keep making connections.
I also visited some other designers how worked on digital design, including the designers from Dundee DJCAD (where I spent my final BA year). Then I saw Sarah's design- Data license, which is so similar to my idea (but in a different way). I also interviewed her about her project and found out that she just graduated form CSM ID. 2 experts in a day, bravo! I tried out her device and kept a copy as evidence. She told me I could find the white paper online. I think I would study on it after I got home. Another thing worthy to be mentioned is that we tried on a very interesting installation (uniq coats from a cloak room), That was a very different experience for me. And I believe it is a very smart way of expressing ideas. It is the last week before the new term. Getting very excited to finally go back to school. I am very interested to see how my cohorts do and I always wanted to have more classes. I have been staying in my dorms for days focusing on updating the prototype. That's always what I fascinate to do. I enjoyed being myself and creating stuffs. I go some recommendations from Lily( the designer ) who I work with. She sent me some designs that similar to mine. and I got some inspirations to try different forms. I got more skilled on dealing with the material. I would enjoy sitting in front of may Mac, watching a comedy while doing another thing in my hand. I adjusted the structure and it works better. I also ordered some chains and it would be a great composition.
